Venereal Diseases (V.D.) are the sexually transmitted infections (STI) which includes a variety of pathogens namely viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa for which the common factor is the mode of transmission and acquisition which is mainly by Sexual relations between human beings.  Venereal diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, chancroid and lymphogranuloma venereum have existed since earliest times. However, it is difficult to identify modern disease entities based on written historical record.

Tests for Venereal Disease - Syphilis

The venereal disease research laboratory test which is popularly known as VDRL is used to diagnose whether or not a patient has syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

If the test comes back positive for syphilis antibodies, the patient might probably have syphilis. If this occurs, the doctor will order a more specific test to confirm the results. A treponemal test is often used to confirm the positive test. Treponemal test checks whether the immune system has produced specific antibodies in direct response to the syphilis-causing Treponema pallidum.
